This account is only used to transmit data from the Weather Station, so please do not try to contact me.

On December 30, 2022, I installed a Bresser 5-in-1 weather station in my backyard in Fontão. This weather station allows me to monitor essential meteorological data like temperature, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, rainfall, and more. I’m mainly using it to see if conditions are good for astrophotography and to watch how the local weather changes over time, especially with all the climate shifts happening.

It's a fun way to stay connected to the sky, and it’s surprisingly useful to know what's happening right outside!

The weather in my village

Fontão is a village located in the municipality of Ponte de Lima, in the Viana do Castelo district, Portugal, and it has a typically Mediterranean maritime climate. This climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. However, in recent decades, the impact of climate change has become more evident in the region, particularly in agriculture, with increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.

In the summer, temperatures in Fontão range from 25°C to 30°C, but they often exceed 30°C, especially during the day. At night, temperatures can remain

warm, staying close to or above 20°C. During the winter months, the minimum temperatures are usually around 5°C, but due to climate change, colder nights have become more frequent, with temperatures dropping below 0°C. These cold periods bring high humidity and frost, transforming the landscape with a layer of white ice. Snow is extremely rare, with the last occurrence recorded on January 14, 1987, when a polar air mass affected the region.

In the spring and autumn, the climate is typically mild but subject to rapid changes and heavy rains. These weather variations affect not only Fontão but have global repercussions, impacting activities that depend on stable weather conditions. Forecasts indicate that extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and intense rains, are likely to become more frequent in the future due to the impact of climate change.
